Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books is a district sponsored competition where 3rd-5th graders (and older) read a list of ten acclaimed books and compete by answering trivia like questions about the books. All students are encouraged to read one or more of the titles as they are all examples of excellent literature and writing.
Battle of the Books is a challenge to read ten book titles and be as familiar with their content as possible for a quiz competition in the spring. The main objective, especially for Pioneer students, is to read and enjoy a variety of critically acclaimed literature, while challenging themselves and peers to know the content as well as possible. I encourage ALL 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students to try and read at least one title, and as many as peak their interest, first and foremost because the current list (see below) is full of fabulous books!
As we move through the school year, those who are interested in challenging themselves to read all ten titles, should make a concerted effort to read all the books and become familiar with them. Many students who become serious try to read them multiple times, as well as discuss them with classmates. Students may use some library time (and possibly other school time when appropriate during Reading Literacy or Computers) to read, discuss and work. Students may also select to participate in the the “Library Workshop” after school group with this as their focus. Mid-year there will be practice questions available for students to test their knowledge and prepare for the competition. Students are also encouraged to prepare by making up their own (“In which book…?”) questions and challenging each other with them.

Sometime after spring break I will check in will all classes to see who has read most or all of the titles, and wants to try and qualify to represent Pioneer against teams at their grade level from other Boulder Valley schools. We will set a date in early April for an individual 20-25 question quiz (could be paper or computer), with the top 5 qualifying to go to the district competition (it will be a Saturday morning in late April or early May).
Note on Sportsmanship: It is important to remember that although this is technically a competition, it is primarily meant for fun, and to encourage challenging oneself as a reader. Unfortunately, only five students may participate in the final district event and often some students who have worked very hard do not get to do so, which can be frustrating and upsetting. Please keep this in mind as you work together and support each other to read, enjoy and become familiar with the books, and especially leading up to and right after the school qualification.
